Course Development Mini-Course

When: Wednesday, Sept 28, 2016 through Wednesday, Oct 12, 2016

Facilitators: Mascha N. Gemein (Asst. Prof. of Practice) and Erin Dokter (Assoc. Prof. of Practice)

Description: A deeper understanding of course design effectively improves the efforts of designing new courses, developing existing ones, or transforming existing courses into fully online and/or accelerated courses.

This fully online OIA Mini-Course will explore the principles of effective course design and help identify the critical components that build the foundation for creating courses of any length as well as for transforming a course from in-person to fully online, or from 16 to 5 weeks. Participants will develop the knowledge, tools, and practice to perform a systematic application of effective course design to their own teaching. This will include developing measurable objectives/outcomes and planning core assignments and activities for effective learning.

Please expect to spend 1-2 hours per day to complete assignments. Optionally, participants are invited to work on a full course (re-)design process and get feedback on their plans and syllabi.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  • Reflect the role of the instructor in designing and teaching courses
  • Discuss and apply models of course design
  • Design measurable learning objectives and assessments that demonstrate learning progress
  • Explore and identify instructional strategies to enhance learning and retention for diverse learners
  • Devise a plan to future course development, evaluation, and revision
